FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • When and why was the SHYC formed?

SHYC was formed in March, 2000.  Primarily, the concept arose as a result of the many boaters located in the Harborview Marina that were looking for some organized activities that involved boating.  A small group of people met in the South Harbor Tavern to discuss the idea of starting a Yacht Club.  The response was overwhelming, and verified the need for such an organization.

  • Is this a power boat club or sailboat club?

Neither, or both.  What we mean is that you can be a power boater, sailor, or just the friend of a boater.  Some of our members do not own boats, but enjoy going out with their boater friends.  We have two classes of membership, "Resident" and "Associate."  Resident members are boat owners and residents of the Harborview Tower Condominiums.  Associate members are friends of resident members.

  • How much does it cost to become a member?

Single memberships are $25 per year.  Family memberships are $25 for the first person and $15 for each additional family member.  As you can see, our objective is not to make money, but to provide the means for organizing family boating activities.  We like to party!

  • What are some of the things that you've done as a group?

Group Cruises - Rock Hall, Worton Creek, Rock Creek, Magothy River, Corsica River

Parties - Labor Day Pool Party, July 4th Pool Party and Fireworks, Storm Parties, Karaoke

Miscellaneous - Entered a boat into the "Parade of Lighted Boats" and won FIRST PLACE for Large Power Boat!  We are an "Award Winning" Yacht Club.

  • Do you follow formal Yacht Club protocol?

Bite your tongue!!  We, by design and purpose, do not follow formal protocol.  As you will see by the titles of our officers, we are almost a parody of formal Yacht Clubs.  When structuring this organization, it was voted that we be sure to do everything contrary to formal club protocol.  We stress that our purpose is to have fun on the water, be family oriented, and never, ever become "stuffy."  If you might be looking for a more formal organization, we are not the club for you.
